Metabolic syndrome is basically a group of several health issues.
These health issues are a result of poor or unhealthy lifestyle causing hypertension, diabetes, obesity, low level of high density cholesterol (HDL) and high level of low density cholesterol (LDL). When three out of these five metabolic syndrome occur together, the risk of heart disease and stroke doubles up.
Moving to the spread of this situation, it affects an estimated one in four adults in the UK. There are various ways which can lead to this health issue.

The major causes of metabolic syndrome are:
- This epidemic can be a result of lack of physical activity. Reduced amount of physical activity results in accumulation of fat around waist. This is the first step towards overweight.
- Metabolic syndrome works in association with insulin resistance. Insulin hormone controls the blood sugar levels. A person with insulin resistance has excess of glucose their bloodstream.

- Firstly, a large waist circumference in both men and women indicates obesity. A waist measurement of 35 inches or more for women and 40 inches or more for men is a primary symptom.
- Secondly, high triglyceride levels and low levels of HDL can cause arteries to clog. A high blood pressure at 140/90 mmHg causing dull headaches, dizzy spells, or more nosebleeds than usual.
- Thirdly, body becomes unable to control blood sugar levels or reduce insulin resistance. A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher is a situation of diabetes. Reports say that about 85 percent of people with type 2 diabetes also have metabolic syndrome.
- Fourthly, people report increase in risk of developing blood clots.

Epidemiology of metabolic syndrome:
- The tentacles of metabolic syndrome are not limited to a particular area and population. It is quite common today as our lifestyle is changing dramatically over the past two decades.
- It is reported that approximately 32% of the population in the U.S. is affected with this monster. Within the US, Mexican Americans are the ones, who have the highest prevalence of metabolic syndrome.
- Moving to other parts of the world, it is estimated that around 25% of adults in Europe are affected. In Latin America majority is dealing with this dreadful condition.
- Even the developing East Asian countries are not lagging behind. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is 33.5% overall, 24.9 % in males and 42.3% in females in case of Asian Indians.
- Several scientific reports claim that the prevalence of this disaster increases with age. About 40% of people over 60 years of age are under the affect of metabolic syndrome.
Prevention of metabolic syndrome:
- Primarily the only way to prevent the trending havoc is to follow a healthy lifestyle. These are adopting healthy eating habits, maintaining a healthy weight. Doing regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes, and quit smoking and drinking alcohol.
- Secondly, one should keep track of their cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. Regular lipoprotein profile should be done. Lipoprotien profile reveals the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. When a lifestyle flip is not enough, one can go to the doctor for further assistance.
Overall, the condition of metabolic syndrome is an emerging epidemic that affects about one out of five persons. Therefore, society as a whole needs to awaken their minds to tackle the menacing problem of metabolic syndrome.
